The cliffs are inhabited by men of the fading empire of Sheirtalar, men who worship the rising sun and build their homes, their cities, in the rock of the cliff-face rising above the cold waters of the river Talar and beneath the misty forests of the Grugach. The forests above, full of dangerous elfs and spirits and horrifying magic, are taboo to the people living among the cliff-cities. Their homes are the cliffs and the river below, plied up and down its legth on barges and rafts and more elaborate vessels for fishing and trade. Here,
as in Channath, magic is outlawed...immoral...feared. To the east lies the Shaareach, a grassland plain held by wild, savage elves and nomadic humans constantly at war; and beyond, Channath, demon-haunted, whispered of in terror, long ago broken away from mighty Sheirtalar and punished for their indiscretion by the Gods; and farther east and south across the expanse of the Reach lay human bandits from the southern wastes and the beast-headed gnolls from their strange land far away.
